The Master Plan was developed by Upper Pottsgrove High School students who were members of the Spark the Wave Club. Members of the club worked not only to develop the plan but also worked with Upper Pottsgrove Open Space Committee and the Township Planning Commission to get our “master plan” approved and partially funded. In 2010, along a quarter-mile stretch of Snyder Road, one of County’s most scenic, designated by the Montgomery County Planning Commission as “aesthetically unique,” contractors had taken down scores of mature hickories, oaks, beeches, dogwoods, and redbuds. Deadline extended to April 4th! The Greater Pottstown Foundation has challenged us! If we can raise $5,000 for the Althouse Arboretum, the Greater Pottstown Foundation will match it with another $5,000 for special summer programs for at-risk and low-income children at the Arboretum. The money will pay for transportation, program costs, and provide scholarships for our local high school student interns who will run the programs. The first-ever indoor ‘Friends’ meeting was held this week. More than a dozen friends and neighbors showed up to learn what the Arboretum was about and share ideas of what was possible. There was delight at what had already been accomplished as well as for what was to come. The group broke into small groups to brainstorm even more ideas and resources. With less than 48 hours notification and temperatures only slightly above freezing, 13 volunteers showed up on Sunday, December 7th clearing Penns Wood Trail in less than two hours! Middle school students, students from Pottsgrove High School Spark the Wave Club, neighbors and a Township Commissioner all joined in to make short work of a project that would have cost the Arboretum a significant amount of money if we had to pay for it.
