So it’s early on a dreary January, Saturday morning, the weather is predicted to be in the low 20’s with snow AND you’re a teenager, who’s just had a full week of school. What do you do? Get up to the Arboretum and unload Christmas Trees of course! At least that is what a very special group of local teens does each year. In 2010, along a quarter-mile stretch of Snyder Road, one of County’s most scenic, designated by the Montgomery County Planning Commission as “aesthetically unique,” contractors had taken down scores of mature hickories, oaks, beeches, dogwoods, and redbuds. The first-ever indoor ‘Friends’ meeting was held this week. More than a dozen friends and neighbors showed up to learn what the Arboretum was about and share ideas of what was possible. Thank You Volunteers!

With less than 48 hours notification and temperatures only slightly above freezing, 13 volunteers showed up on Sunday, December 7th clearing Penns Wood Trail in less than two hours! Middle school students, students from Pottsgrove High School Spark the Wave Club, neighbors and a Township Commissioner all joined in to make short work of a project that would have cost the Arboretum a significant amount of money if we had to pay for it.
