Night Hike a Huge Success for Upper Pottsgrove

Night HikeAn exciting event last night in Upper Pottsgrove. About 350 people showed up for a Night Hike at the Althouse Arboretum.

There were games, storytelling, a scavenger hunt, glow stick lit trails, snacks, face and pumpkin painting, a marshmallow roast and prizes for every child. Some children came in costume, all came with flashlights to explore and find what awaited them.

It was neighbors meeting neighbors, parents meeting parents, children connecting with parents and friends. All delighted, excited, surprised and grateful; all wanting to come back, many wanting to get more involved through the Friends of the Arboretum.

Several of the township commissioners were in attendance to witness the largest event yet held at the Arboretum. The Arboretum, on Gilbertsville Road near Snyder Road, is the result of a unique partnership created by the township where the township owns the trails but has partnered with the SAVE Alliance Foundation, a non-profit group who owns part of the property to run programs. The Foundation’s plan is to convert the property into a functioning environmental center. They have already put in a system of trails, and are in the process of designing and constructing outdoor learning centers, adding a pavilion, gardens, preserving the existing farmhouse.

While the townships has been a reputation for being proactive in purchasing and developing open space this collaboration is new and it is a unique arrangement, not seen before in open space projects. Looks like they’ve got themselves a winner.
