GreenAllies

Althouse Arboretum is the result of a unique and brilliant collaboration between GreenAllies, a non-profit organization and Upper Pottsgrove Township.

The SAVE Alliance Foundation is a non-profit organization that has changed its name and is doing business as GreenAllies. It provides resources dedicated to the development of community environmental solutions through youth leadership. It’s mission is to forge connections between students and communities that promote environmental sustainability both locally and globally,

In 2014 GreenAllies formed a unique agreement with Upper Pottsgrove Township. The Township purchased 15 acres of the Althouse Arboretum and the Hilsee family donated the adjoining house their grandparents had lived in and 1.6 acres to GreenAllies

GreenAllies will utilize the 1800’s house as its base of operations. The upstairs of the house will be the office and headquarters and the downstairs dedicated to displays, environmental education and community gatherings. A classroom building is in the plans to be added for educational purposes. Through cross-easement agreements with the Township, the land purchased by the Township will be used as an environmental education center, complete with trails, outdoor classrooms and nature education sites managed and run by GreenAllies with no cost to the Township.

All programs, activities, trail work and more is done by GreenAllies with input from local students and community members. GreenAllies is solely funded by grants and donations. The Arboretumt has recently connected to two other large open space lands to increase our program options while preserving additional acreage.

Amazing things have been accomplished in the first year of operations.

The Foundation’s Executive Director Ken Hamilton, a national-award winning environmental science educator stated: “Upper Pottsgrove Township has had a very strong dedication to open space, and it made sense to partner with them to place our state-of-the-art environmental resource center there.”
