Christmas Tree Recycling

Christmas Tree Recycling

So it’s early on a dreary January, Saturday morning, the weather is predicted to be in the low 20’s with snow AND you’re a teenager, who’s just had a full week of school. What do you do? Get up to the Arboretum and unload Christmas Trees of course! At least that is what a very special group of local teens does each year.

From 9 am to 4 pm our dedicated group of student volunteers unloaded cars, trucks and trailers. They untangled rope and bungee cords as they gently rolled trees off roofs and out of trunks and truck beds. Those dropping off trees were impressed not only with the care students took but with their cheerfulness and ability to work so well together.

Students weren’t the only impressive thing about Christmas Tree recycling day. There was also our sponsor  Kirk’s Lawn Care http://kirkslawncare.com. Not only did Kirk donate funds to our event but he put out an invitation to all his customers offering to pick up their tree for a donation to the Arboretum and brought lots of trees (and donations) for us to unload.

Dan Heuer, another friend of the Arboretum made multiple trips picking up trees as well and Don Clancy announced on his neighborhood’s Facebook page that he’d pick up neighbor’s trees and deliver them to us and did just that with multiple trips!

We received over 200 trees and many generous cash donations from those participating. The township graciously turned the trees into mulch to spread on our trails this Spring (smells so good!) and the cash will be a great help as we prepare the house to open this Spring as our office and Community Center.

Thank you so much to everyone who supported us! What awesome volunteers, friends and community we have!
